Why HEAT training needs to reflect the realities of modern international travel

Most travel policies cover the emergency. HEAT PLUS+ prepares people for everything that happens before it becomes one.

International travel does not have to involve a war zone to expose a travelling member of staff to a situation they are unprepared for.

A planned route becomes unusable. Transport arrangements change. Civil unrest begins nearby. A traveller is questioned at a checkpoint. A device is searched. Someone becomes ill where medical support is limited.

The employee may be highly experienced in their role, but that does not automatically make them an experienced traveller in a complex environment.

This is why we created HEAT PLUS+: Hostile Environment Awareness Training with traveller resilience.

Modern business travel security requires more than an emergency number

Most organisations prepare overseas travel carefully. Flights and accommodation are booked, insurance is arranged and travellers are given contact details for use in an emergency.

But what happens before something is clearly an emergency?

Would the traveller recognise that the situation around them had changed?

Would they know whether the alternative transport being offered was safe?

Would they know when to contact the organisation, what information to provide and whether to continue, pause, shelter or leave?

People often default to following those around them, particularly in an unfamiliar country where they do not want to appear difficult or cause offence.

HEAT PLUS+ helps travellers develop the awareness and judgement to pause, assess what has changed and make a more informed decision.

Why traveller resilience matters

Traditional Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) covers many important physical and operational risks. However, we felt something vital needed to run through the entire programme: resilience.

Stress changes how people process information. It can affect memory, communication, perception and decision-making at exactly the moment someone needs to think clearly.

Resilience is therefore not an additional wellbeing topic at the end of HEAT PLUS+. It is a central part of preparing people to respond effectively.

Delegates explore stress and trauma awareness, personal vulnerability, supporting themselves and others, psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth.

The aim is not to frighten people or make them believe that every journey will go wrong. It is to give them practical ways to remain effective if it does.

The destination is only part of the risk

Two people can follow exactly the same itinerary and face very different risks.

Gender, identity, health, experience, visibility, role and reason for travelling can all influence how someone is perceived and treated.

For example, a female investigator may hold the most senior role in the room but find that local officials disregard her and direct every response to a male colleague. In another environment, gender or identity may increase exposure to harassment, intimidation or unwanted attention.

HEAT PLUS+ addresses these realities directly. Personal safety, sexual harassment and assault awareness, gender and identity-based risk and personal vulnerability are included because they can materially affect a traveller's experience.

HEAT training built around the organisation

Generic information has limits.

A corporate investigator conducting sensitive work does not face exactly the same risks as a consultant visiting a client, an engineer attending a remote site or a senior leader travelling with a visible public profile.

The organisation's work, traveller profiles, destinations, policies, support arrangements and escalation routes all matter.

HEAT PLUS+ can be contextualised around those factors so delegates understand how the learning applies to the work they are actually there to undertake.

When we delivered the programme for Harod Associates, a global investigations organisation, the training reflected the environments its people enter, the sensitive information they carry and the decisions they may need to make independently.

The programme included situational awareness, personal safety, gender and identity-based risk, digital exposure, journey disruption, trauma first aid, detention, crisis communication and psychological resilience.

That context made the learning relevant to their people rather than simply presenting a standard syllabus.

What HEAT PLUS+ covers

HEAT PLUS+ is delivered across seven core units, combining the established principles of Hostile Environment Awareness Training with the risks and pressures faced by modern international travellers.

1. Operating in complex environments

Risk assessment, destination and traveller risk, itinerary planning, threat mitigation, communications, trigger points, escalation and crisis-management awareness.

2. Personal safety

Conflict resolution, situational awareness, behavioural indicators, gender and identity-based risk, sexual harassment and assault awareness, weapons incidents, natural disasters and disruption planning.

3. Operational safety and security

Travel risk management, journey planning, checkpoints, dealing with authorities, low-profile conduct, explosive threats, mines, unexploded ordnance and drone awareness.

4. Stress, trauma and resilience

Personal vulnerability, supporting yourself and others, psychological resilience and post-traumatic growth.

5. Kidnapping and detention

Kidnap avoidance, detention, arrest and questioning, legal and consular support, company notification, personal safety and stress control.

6. The digital threat landscape

Device hygiene, Wi-Fi, phishing, social media exposure, secure communications, sensitive data, border crossings, device compromise and reporting.

7. Trauma first aid

Basic life support, primary survey, airway management, CPR, AED use, catastrophic bleeding and other life-threatening injuries.

Specialists from every discipline the course covers

HEAT PLUS+ brings together active world-class experts from different disciplines, including corporate security, hostile environments, NGO operations, travel risk, digital security, medical response, behavioural risk and the challenges faced by female travellers.

They remain operational, continue to deploy and bring current, first-hand experience into the Alchemy Global HEAT training room.

This breadth matters because real incidents rarely involve one type of risk.

A developing situation may involve personal safety, medical needs, digital exposure, communication and psychological pressure at the same time.

Delegates therefore benefit from several specialist perspectives rather than one instructor's experience of every subject.

Together with our expertise, and the requirements of the businesses we work with, our HEAT PLUS+ course integrates with any business in the modern world that has staff travelling internationally, and this feedback from the Managing Director of Harod Associates is testament to that:

As a global investigations firm, our work frequently takes our people to medium and high-risk destinations. Even in more stable environments, the sensitive nature of our assignments means we need to look beyond the usual risks of business travel.

Alchemy Global understands these challenges and brings a practical, proportionate approach to travel security. Their support helps us strengthen our arrangements to protect our people, operations and reputation, meet our duty of care responsibilities and align our travel risk management programme with ISO 31030.

For Harod, investing in security is also about building confidence, giving our employees, clients, and insurers assurance that we take these responsibilities seriously.

Practical preparation without unnecessary distress

Some traditional HEAT courses have relied on highly confrontational or stressful exercises to create a sense of realism.

We take a different approach.

HEAT PLUS+ combines classroom learning, facilitated discussion, practical demonstrations, decision-making exercises and controlled scenarios.

The practical elements are designed to build confidence, judgement and useful behaviour. Delegates are not humiliated, intimidated or exposed to unnecessary psychological distress.

Training should prepare people to respond more effectively. It should not create an experience they need to recover from.

What delegates leave able to do

HEAT PLUS+ is designed to help people who travel to:

  • Prepare more effectively for international travel
  • Recognise early warning signs and changes around them
  • Reduce their personal and digital exposure
  • Respond to security and medical incidents
  • Communicate clearly during a developing situation
  • Manage encounters with authorities or checkpoints
  • Understand how stress may affect their decisions
  • Decide when to continue, pause, escalate, shelter or leave
  • Support themselves and others following a difficult experience

The outcome is a more prepared traveller with greater confidence in how to respond when the original plan no longer applies.

For the organisation, it supports duty of care and creates greater confidence that its people have received practical preparation before travelling.

HEAT PLUS+ is delivered over four days in Central London, with open courses limited to a maximum of 12 delegates. Private, contextualised programmes are also available for organisations preparing a wider team.
