Strategic consulting and advisory

The upstream work. What you are exposed to, what is proportionate, and how to evidence that the decision was the right one. This is where an engagement usually starts, whichever pillar it ends up in.

01
Context

Two reasons this gets commissioned.

Either somebody suspects the specification is wrong, or somebody needs to demonstrate that it is right before signing for it. Both are legitimate, and both are cheaper to answer before the order is placed.

The common failure is a specification written by the party who will supply it. That is not necessarily dishonest, but it produces a document only one product can satisfy, and it removes any basis for comparing tenders.

The other failure is a design that is technically correct and operationally impossible: a system nobody has the staff to monitor, or a door that gets propped open every morning to get the deliveries in.

02
Method

Four stages.

Stage 01
Requirement review

What the design is supposed to achieve, and whether anybody has written that down in terms that can actually be tested.

Stage 02
Design and specification

Reviewed against the requirement and the applicable standards. Product-neutral, so the finding is about performance rather than brand.

Stage 03
Operational reality

Whether the design can be run by the people who will actually run it, on the shifts they actually work, with the staffing you actually have.

Stage 04
Installation assurance

What was installed against what was specified, and what was genuinely demonstrated at handover rather than signed off on trust.

01
Service

Named deliverables, not outcomes language

Operational requirement, written or reviewed, in testable terms

Design review report with findings graded by consequence

Product-neutral performance specification suitable for tender

Tender return assessment scored against the specification

Commissioning witness and snagging schedule

Written independent opinion for a client, funder or insurer

Assurance

A specification only one product can satisfy is not a specification.

04
Fit

Who is this for?

Clients about to sign for a security installation, funders and insurers who need an independent opinion, and design teams who would rather have their proposals tested before they go out to tender than after.
